What is FOLU?

The Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU) is a community of organisations and individuals committed to the urgent need to transform the way we produce and consume food, and the way we use the planet for people, nature and the climate. We support science-based solutions and help build a shared vision of the challenges and opportunities to drive collective and ambitious action.

Our strength comes from a growing community of people, countries, companies, FOLU ambassadors, funders and all those who believe in our mission: “to ensure that food and land use systems play their part in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement”. This will ensure the future prosperity of all people and protect and restore our planet’s vital ecosystems.

We bring together civil society actors, businesses, investors, governments and international agencies, as well as academia to change the narrative on food and land use, and bring about change through collaboration. We work as a coalition on policy adjustments, strengthening fair markets, generating circular business models, greater social inclusion, digital revolution, fostering sustainable projects, effective communication and behaviour change.

FOLU Global

FOLU works from the local to the global, creating platforms in countries around the world to support research and analysis, build capacity and tools, and deepen participatory processes that support the transformation of food and land use systems to meet local and global goals. This includes integrating food and land use systems into Country Determined Contributions (NDCs), the Paris Agreement to reduce emissions and adapt to climate change impacts, as well as meeting the Sendai Framework’s Global Biodiversity Targets.

So far, FOLU platforms have been established in Australia, China, Colombia, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, the Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland) and the UK. FOLU works in countries where Food, Agriculture, Biodiversity, Land and Energy (FABLE) Consortium teams already exist, of which there are more than 20. The FABLE Consortium helps develop the data and modelling infrastructure needed to chart viable long-term pathways towards sustainable food and land use systems.

Key partners of the Global FOLU Coalition include the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), EAT Forum, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), SYSTEMIQ, World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the World Resources Institute (WRI).

FOLU Colombia

FOLU Colombia began activities in 2017, adding to the global vision of achieving food systems that serve the purpose of prosperity for people and planet.

In its first stage, the initiative completed a national diagnosis highlighting the policies, plans, projects, strategies and actions advanced in the country on issues of conservation and regeneration, increasing agricultural productivity in a sustainable way, healthy and wholesome food, and management of food loss and waste.

Based on this diagnosis, a Roadmap for the New Food and Land Use Economy was developed based on four thematic pillars: promoting productive and sustainable territories and aquatic systems; achieving a healthy and nutritious plate of food on every table, avoiding loss and waste; promoting fair, efficient and inclusive markets; and innovating, informing and inspiring.

In parallel to promoting actions at the national level, FOLU has generated diagnoses and roadmaps at the territorial level in Quindío, Antioquia and Valle del Cauca. In these territories, FOLU has public-private coalitions to transform food systems according to their own priorities.

Our Allies

The FOLU Colombia Coalition includes various public-private and civil society actors at national and territorial levels.

At the national level, FOLU Colombia works with the different ministries that cover food systems in a cross-cutting manner, such as: the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development; the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development; the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism; the Ministry of Health and Social Protection; and the National Planning Department.

Moreover, in each territory where it works, FOLU has confirmed management groups that promote the vision of food systems change with public actors, businesses, universities and civil society organisations. Likewise, it has promoted regeneration networks with different actors in the territories that are making transformational changes.

FOLU Colombia is coordinated by E3 – Ecology, Economy and Ethics, a Colombian entity that supports public and private institutions in promoting ecology, economy and ethics as an integral part of their planning and business strategies.

FOLU Colombia is funded primarily by the Norwegian International Climate and Forest Initiative (NICFI), with additional support from entities that share its Vision for Change.

The FOLU Colombia Coalition has a group of experienced ambassadors who have accompanied the team in planning and promoting actions to achieve its objectives. These ambassadors are part of a global group of FOLU ambassadors.
